How to export your chats

WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram don't let other apps read your messages directly. Each one lets you download a copy, and Recall reads that copy. Re-import later to add newer messages: ones already in Recall are skipped.

WhatsApp

iPhone

  1. Open the chat. For your own notes, it is the chat with your name and "(You)".
  2. Tap the chat name at the top, scroll down, tap Export Chat.
  3. Choose Without Media and save the .zip to Files, or AirDrop it to your computer.
  4. Drop the .zip on Recall's Import screen. Repeat for every chat you want.

Android

  1. Open the chat and tap the three dots, then More, then Export chat.
  2. Choose Without media and save or share the file.
  3. Drop the .zip or .txt on Recall's Import screen.

Messenger

  1. In Facebook, open Settings, then Accounts Center.
  2. Go to Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
  3. Pick your Facebook account, then Specific types of information, then Messages.
  4. Download to device. Set the date range to All time and the format to JSON. Low media quality keeps the file small.
  5. Meta emails you when the file is ready, which can take from minutes to a few days. Drop every part of the download on Recall's Import screen.

Newer end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats can be missing from that download. In Messenger, open the end-to-end encrypted chats settings and use Download secure storage data, then drop those files on the Import screen too.

Instagram

  1. In Instagram, open Settings, then Accounts Center.
  2. Go to Your information and permissions, then Download your information.
  3. Pick your Instagram account, then Specific types of information, then Messages.
  4. Download to device. Set the date range to All time and the format to JSON. Low media quality keeps the file small.
  5. Meta emails you when the file is ready, which can take from minutes to a few days. Drop every part of the download on Recall's Import screen.

What is stored

Message text, who sent it, and when. Photos, videos and voice notes are listed by name only, the files are never uploaded. With automatic labels on, message text is sent to Claude by Anthropic to pick labels. Everything is tied to your account and can be deleted in Settings.
